Why Does My RCD Keep Tripping?

What the RCD is doing

A residual current device monitors the balance of current flowing through the conductors it protects. When it detects a significant imbalance, it disconnects the supply quickly. This helps reduce the risk of electric shock and electrical fire, although it does not make every situation safe.

The trip is therefore a symptom, not a diagnosis. The RCD may be responding correctly to a fault elsewhere, or the device itself may require testing.

  • A faulty appliance, especially one containing a heating element or motor.
  • Moisture in outdoor equipment, lights, junctions or cables.
  • Damaged insulation or a cable affected by drilling, impact or rodents.
  • A neutral-to-earth fault on one circuit.
  • Several connected devices producing enough combined leakage to operate the RCD.
  • A deteriorated accessory, connection or piece of fixed equipment.
  • An RCD that is defective or unsuitable for the installation conditions.

A safe way to observe the pattern

Without opening equipment, note which switches or appliances were in use when the trip occurred. If the consumer unit is undamaged, dry and safe to approach, you may switch off appliances at their normal controls and unplug portable equipment before attempting one reset. Do not continue if there is smell, heat, water, damage or arcing.

If the RCD resets and trips when a particular appliance is connected, stop using that appliance. If it will not reset with portable equipment disconnected, or the pattern is unclear, arrange professional fault finding.

Why intermittent trips can take time to diagnose

Some faults appear only when equipment heats up, when rain reaches an outdoor connection, or when a cable moves. The electrician may need to divide the installation, test circuits separately and reproduce operating conditions. A trip that occurs once every few days can be more difficult than a permanent fault.

Provide a simple diary showing date, time, weather, appliances running and which protective devices operated. This can reduce guesswork.

Do not bypass the protection

Never replace a protective device with a different rating, hold it on, bridge it or move circuits to avoid trips without proper assessment. That removes a warning without removing the fault. The correct response is to identify the affected equipment or circuit and confirm the protective device operates correctly.
